Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) has been recognised on the national stage, winning the Judges’ Choice Award at the 2025 Comcare National Work Health and Safety Awards.
This award is presented to an organisation that demonstrates exceptional innovation and leadership in workplace health and safety. It acknowledges WSI’s proactive approach to psychosocial risk management, particularly its innovative framework developed in response to the Australian Code of Practice for Managing Psychosocial Hazards.
For the same initiative, the airport also received a Commendation Award in Comcare's Prevention Category, recognising excellence in addressing psychological and physical risk factors through innovative solutions and new technologies.
WSI CEO Simon Hickey said this national recognition reflects the airport’s unwavering commitment to zero harm and the importance of collaboration and continuous improvement.
“Safety is and always will be a core value at WSI. From day one, we’ve prioritised creating a culture where team members feel empowered to prioritise safety and this award is a testament to that dedication,” Mr Hickey said.
The airport’s Psychosocial Risk Management framework was custom-built by the WSI team to enhance hazard exposure assessments using multiple data points that feed into a repeatable Plan–Do–Check–Act approach. Developed in workshops with a cross-section of representatives across functions, the team used this data to inform risk ratings, treatment strategies and systemic job design improvements.
WSI General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment David Neville said the approach has already delivered tangible outcomes throughout the repeated process.
“WSI will continue to look for new and innovative ways to reduce risk and enhance wellbeing to keep people safe as we prepare for 24/7 operations next year,” Mr Neville said.
